Courage Brewery

In 1787, John Courage founded Courage & Co at the Anchor Brewhouse on Shad Thames, marking a significant chapter in London’s brewing history.

The brewery comprised three essential sections: the Boiler House, which generated steam; the Brewhouse, where malted barley was transformed into beer; and the Malt Mill, responsible for processing grains. Courage quickly built a reputation for producing high-quality ales, establishing the brewery as a prominent name in the industry.

Today, remnants of this historic brewery can still be found throughout Shad Thames. If you look closely, you’ll spot the iconic Courage logo, the Cockrill, on a gate opposite Courage Yard along with a plaque that recounts the history of the Anchor Brewhouse and John Courage’s contributions to brewing.
